EPDM wet pour, also known as pour-in-place (PIP) surfacing, is one of the most popular choices for playgrounds, recreational areas, and sports courts. It offers a seamless, cushioned, and highly durable finish when installed correctly. Before starting the installation, gather all the tools and materials required to achieve a professional finish. Recommended tools include:
- Forced-action mixer or low-speed paddle mixer for blending rubber granules with polyurethane binder.
- Wheelbarrows for transporting mixed material efficiently.
- Rakes and screed bars to level and spread the SBR base layer.
- Trowels (metal or neoprene) lubricated with a release agent such as soapy water or WD-40 to prevent sticking while smoothing the surface.
- Measuring buckets and scales to maintain accurate mixing ratios.
- Chalk line for marking design boundaries or architectural patterns.
- 75–100 lb flooring roller or hand roller to compact the layers and eliminate trapped air.
2. Recommended Installation Surfaces
EPDM wet pour flooring can be installed on fully cured concrete, asphalt, treated wood, or other stable and dry substrates. For best results, use a solid, level, and well-drained concrete or asphalt base. The substrate must be clean, smooth, crack-free, and fully cured before installation. Proper drainage is essential to avoid standing water, which can lead to bubbling, shifting, or premature wear of the surface.
3. Substrate Preparation
Preparation is critical for achieving a flawless and smooth surface. Carefully inspect the substrate for cracks, holes, or uneven areas. Fill imperfections to create a smooth and level finish, as any flaws may transfer through the top layer. Sweep or vacuum the base thoroughly to remove dust, dirt, or contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
Once the surface is prepared, apply a primer by mixing thinner with polyurethane binder. Use a roller or brush to apply the primer evenly. Allow it to become tacky before proceeding to the base layer installation.
4. Base Layer (SBR) Installation
The base layer provides shock absorption and stability. It is made from SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) granules mixed with polyurethane binder. Blend the mixture for about two minutes until all granules are evenly coated. Pour onto the primed substrate and spread evenly using a rake or screed bar.
Compact the SBR mixture thoroughly to the specified depth and density. Proper compaction ensures resilience and prevents settlement over time. For playgrounds requiring different thicknesses, such as critical fall height zones, use depth gauges and chalk lines to mark areas according to the design plan before installation.
5. Wear Layer (EPDM) Installation
The top layer consists of EPDM granules mixed with binder. Maintain the recommended manufacturer ratio for consistency and durability. Avoid over-mixing, as this may accelerate curing.
Spread the mixture evenly over the cured SBR base. For small areas, hand trowelling is suitable, while for large playgrounds or sports courts, a mechanical paver is recommended to achieve a smooth, uniform finish. The EPDM wear layer is usually applied at 10–15 mm thickness. Ensure that no pinholes, gaps, or uneven spots remain before curing.
6. Curing
After installation, the EPDM wet pour surface requires proper curing. Allow 4–5 days before permitting foot traffic or installing equipment. Curing time varies depending on ambient temperature and project size.
Important: Do not install during rainy weather. Moisture interferes with binder curing and can cause surface defects. Always check the weather forecast before installation and use protective covers if unexpected rain occurs.
7. Maintenance Guidelines
Routine maintenance significantly extends the life of EPDM pour-in-place (PIP) surfacing.
- Regular Cleaning: Sweep the surface to remove dirt, leaves, and debris. Sharp objects should be cleared promptly to avoid puncturing the wear layer.
- Washing: Clean periodically with mild soap and water or a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid high-pressure washing, harsh solvents, or strong chemicals that may erode the binder.
- Moisture Management: Remove standing water promptly and ensure drains remain unclogged to prevent surface damage.
- Inspections: Check seams, joints, and high-wear zones regularly. Repair minor damage immediately to avoid further deterioration.
- Preventive Care: Avoid dragging sharp or heavy objects across the surface. In playgrounds, rotate heavy equipment occasionally to distribute wear evenly.
